Nora Engstrom, 20, a 2021 graduate of Nevada High School, is working as an intern with the City of Nevada this summer, helping in several areas.
Nora will work with Ryan Hutton to organize older maps and other planning and zoning materials that are in storage. She will also be job shadowing Ryan and possibly public safety personnel as they work with community members on nuisance abatement and other issues.
As a psychology major at the University of Iowa, Nora said she’s very excited for the opportunity to be involved, especially as City officials work with the public. “Seeing the human interaction; that’s a lot of what psychology is about,” she said.
Nora was originally talking with City Councilwoman Barb Mittman about possible summer projects, and Mittman pointed her toward the City administration, feeling her skillset matched some of the City’s needs.
As a student at University of Iowa, Nora is excited for the opportunity to study abroad this fall in Lancaster, England. She plans to be there for at least 10 weeks. When she’s back on campus in Iowa City, Nora said she is involved with the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity, which does a lot of volunteer activities, including dance marathons and working at a food pantry.
When she was a student at Nevada High School, Nora enjoyed being the stage manager every year for theater productions in the Josephine Tope Community Auditorium. She also enjoyed Ethics Bowl, which involved debating cases.
Nora’s family includes her mom, Tracie, a local therapist, and dad, Fred, a farm manager at the USDA facility in Ames, along with younger brothers, Frank, who will be a senior this coming year at NHS, and Miles, who will be a sophomore this coming year at NHS. Her family lives in the rural Nevada area, where they have a really big garden, and may have a large sunflower field this year if conditions allow.
We’re excited to have you on board at the City this summer, Nora.
