For more than 18 years, Harmony Clothing Closet has filled a critical gap for families across Nevada and Story County. Located at 1122 6th St., Harmony provides free clothing, shoes, toys, linens, and small household items to anyone in need with no applications or income requirements.
As families face rising costs for food, rent, transportation, and medical care, Harmony offers stability in one of the most basic areas of daily life: Clothing. By removing the cost of coats, shoes, school outfits, and household essentials, Harmony helps families stretch their budgets toward food, housing, utilities, and medical needs.
A Growing Need Across Iowa and Beyond
Harmony has served:
• More than 15,000 shoppers
• Over 240,000 lifetime shoppers
• Residents from 51 Iowa counties
• Families from 20 states and 8 countries
• Nearly 2 million items distributed since 2007
Rising costs have made clothing a financial hardship for many families, especially those with children. Harmony helps ease that strain. “Every coat, every pair of shoes, every shirt makes a difference,” says Elizabeth Gindt, coordinator for Harmony. “Parents often tell us the money they save here goes straight toward groceries or other household needs.”
Driven by Community Support
Harmony receives no state or federal funding. The program operates solely through free-will donations and volunteer support. Every donated dollar goes directly toward:
• Utilities (heat, cooling, water, electricity)
• Building, maintenance, and garbage costs
• Supplies that keep the space clean and organized
With growing demand and rising operational costs, financial support is more important than ever.
Volunteers Keep Harmony Moving
Volunteers sort clothing, restock racks, greet shoppers, and maintain a warm, dignified environment. Even one hour a month makes a meaningful difference.
Volunteer opportunities include:
• Monday evenings (4–7 p.m.)
• Flexible weekday sorting shifts
• Group volunteer days for businesses, school groups, and service organizations
Fill the Foyer – January 2026
Harmony will once again participate in the annual Fill the Foyer event in January 2026. This community-wide collection drive helps stock Harmony with winter weather gear for people of all ages, including coats, boots, gloves, hats, snow pants, and warm layers.
Winter items are some of the most requested and most needed pieces throughout the season, and Fill the Foyer ensures that children, adults, and seniors can stay warm and safe during the coldest months of the year. Donations from this event directly support families who would otherwise struggle to afford the high cost of winter gear.
Community members are encouraged to donate new or gently used winter items during the month of January to help Harmony continue meeting this essential need.
