Ongling: Discussion and appropriate follow-up regarding benches and street lights for the north end of 6th Street’s downtown district

City Administrator Jordan Cook had received a quote of $123,000 to replace and run conduit for the streetlights between M and N Avenue on Sixth Street to match the newer downtown lights. That does not include the cost of setting up electrical outlets on the poles to support food trucks.

After some discussion about the cost, Luke Spence suggested an idea from Mayor Ryan Condon to simply repaint the existing poles black, since those poles are still in good condition, and also add some type of banners that would honor the branches of the military, since the Legion is located in that block. Cook thought it might be possible to buy accessories to hang banners on those types of poles.

City staff was given direction to research the cost of benches, trash cans, and hardware to spruce up that block at a more reasonable cost.

It was also suggested to have Emily at Main Street Nevada talk to the businesses on that block and be sure they’re ok with those types of banners.

New Business

Approved: A Resolution in support of Central Iowa Regional Planning Alliance Multijurisdictional Application to the US Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for ALL (SS4A) Grant Program

Jason Sampson wanted to know what being awarded this money means for the City. Cook said if awarded, he’d hope the City could look at putting turn lanes in along Lincoln Highway between Nevada and Ames (590th and 610th ), as the businesses – Key Coop, Lincolnway Energy and Verbio – have stressed the importance of this safety measure. If the City is chosen to receive the money, they’d have to decide if they want it, and the money would provide an 80/20 cost sharing (Federal/City). The overall cost of the project for turn lanes is $3.3 million, and City would pay 20 percent of that.
