Multi-Agency Traffic Project Results

On Sept. 19, agencies in Story County conducted a traffic project with a focus on speeding, seat belt usage, and impaired drivers. Areas of focus were Interstate 35 and Highway 30.

Agencies participating in the project were Nevada Public Safety Department, Ames PD, Iowa State Patrol, Huxley PD, and Story City PD.

During the project, officers made 60 traffic stops resulting in 19 traffic citations and 41 traffic warnings. The fastest speed recorded was 98 miles per hour on Interstate 35. So far this year in Iowa, we have recorded 241 traffic deaths on Iowa roads. Excessive speed and non-compliance with seat belt usage are the main contributors to traffic crash fatalities.

The Nevada Public Safety Department and surrounding agencies take traffic safety very seriously and have a goal of zero fatalities. Agencies in Story County will continue to conduct traffic projects like this on the highways, interstates, and inside their communities to help reduce fatalities on Iowa roads.

What follows is a breakdown of the traffic contacts during this recent project:

Speed – 39

Seat belt – 8

No Insurance – 4

Suspended Driver – 2

Tint – 2

Equipment/other – 5
