Hy-Vee to bring Dollar Fresh store to Nevada

A Hy-Vee Dollar Fresh store will open in Nevada later this year along Fawcett Parkway.

Nevada Economic Development Council (NEDC) Director John Hall said Hy-Vee’s interest in Nevada and the location selected in Nevada make sense. “Ready access to Highway 30… the regional draw of Nevada from the east… a community positioned for growth,” he said, all make Nevada an attractive place for business.

Hall said the NEDC and City did not recruit Hy-Vee to come to Nevada. “We make a point of not actively recruiting competitors to the market,” he said. But when Hy-Vee chose to come to Nevada, Hall said, the NEDC and City helped them through the process.

Shawn Cole, Building and Zoning Administrator for Nevada, said the Nevada Dollar Fresh store would not include a gas station. Cole said the site plans indicate Nevada’s Dollar Fresh will have a kitchen and food service/seating area. He was not certain of any other amenities the store might have.

On its website, Hy-Vee describes its Dollar Fresh stores as being “designed to offer customers in smaller communities a fresh, new product selection at low prices. Customers will find a full selection of grocery items, a bakery section with a full range of fresh-baked items, a dollar section, a Wall of Value, ready-to-eat meal offerings, and other services.”

Hall said Hy-Vee Dollar Fresh will “continue to cement the East Business Park as an anchor commercial district for large box and chain options. It’s distinctly separate from our downtown, but offers great access to and from the highway,” Hall said.

It also continues to fill in the lots along Fawcett Parkway.

“Currently we have one, 2-acre parcel remaining (along Fawcett Parkway).” While he can’t share details about it yet, Hall said one additional lot had been sold in the area, and the final lot available also has a current interest. “It’s anticipated that something will happen there in 2021,” he said.

As the Fawcett Parkway lots fill in, Hall said the NEDC would focus on finding new commercial land to develop. “As we continue to grow, there will be opportunities for additional chains and hopefully some local entrepreneurs as well.”
