Nevada High School Gavin Egeland presents at the World Food Prize meeting.
Gavin Egeland, a Nevada High School junior, has been selected for a World Food Prize Borlaug-Ruan research internship abroad.
Renee Cooper, senior program manager of the World Food Prize Global Youth Program, notified Egeland last week (Feb. 14) that he will study and work at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi, Kenya. Egeland will be under the tutelage of Dr. Kelvin Shikuku, an economist in their Livestock Climate and Environment Program. The summer internship will last eight weeks.
“I was shocked to find out I received this, especially since this is a prestigious and competitive global opportunity,” said Gavin after hearing the news. “I know that my work ethic and desire to learn will help me flourish in this internship.”
Egeland has participated in the World Food Prize Iowa Youth Institute, and the Global Youth Institute. In addition, he has presented his scholarly papers at the Nevada High School World Food Prize Dinner meetings in 2023 and 2024.
Gavin is the son of Adam and Melissa Egeland of Nevada. Nevada educator Kevin Cooper is Gavin’s World Food Prize teacher mentor. Said Cooper, “This is very exciting to see one of our students receive this opportunity. I admire Gavin’s work ethic and academic work.”
“I have to admit, I am a little nervous,” Gavin said, “but very excited and grateful for this opportunity.”
