At the November 25, 2024, Nevada City Council meeting, Mayor Brett Barker submitted his letter of resignation after being elected to the State House of Representatives. Council members voted to fill the remaining mayoral term by appointment. The current term expires December 2025.
Those interested in becoming Mayor need to complete and turn in THIS APPLICATION [CLICK HERE] by Monday, December 16, 2024. (If you need a hard copy of the application, you may pick one up at City Hall during our regular office hours, M-F, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) All applications must be turned in at the administrative desk at City Hall.
A committee, composed of members of the Nevada City Council as well as City leaders, will review applications and make a recommendation to the full Council at the January 13, 2025 regular council meeting; if approved by council, an appointment would be made at that meeting.
The public may petition for a special election within 14 days after publication of the notice of intent to appoint or within 14 days after the appointment is made, whichever is later. The cost of a special election would be approximately $10,400.
The appointment would only fill the seat until the next city election after votes are certified. The winner would take office in late November or early December.
