On Monday, July 22, the Nevada City Council passed the first reading of an ordinance that will establish a new 4-way stop in Nevada at the intersection of 6th Street and E Avenue.
According to the Nevada Public Safety Department, the agency has responded to five traffic accidents at that intersection since the opening of the S-14 Overpass Bridge and the closing of the S-14/Highway 30 at-grade intersection. Those two events have increased the use of S-14 for vehicles entering Nevada.
As stated in the ordinance, “The north and south traffic on 6th Street is not controlled by a traffic control device. Vehicles stopped at E Avenue have limited visibility of traffic from the south due to the terrain of the properties to the south. The speed limit of 35 mph for 6th Street also reduces the response time associated with decreased visibility.”
Along with implementing a four-way stop, the council’s motion also included reducing the speed limit between E Avenue and I Avenue to 25 mph (down from the current 35 mph).
This ordinance will not go into effect until a third and final reading and publication.
