A: According to Shawn Cole, City Building & Zoning Administrator, this is a common question that he is asked. He explained, the three lines that are being worked on in the downtown infrastructure project – sewer, storm and water – are located at different depths under the surface of the street.
What often happens, Cole explained, is that workers will work on each line separately, starting with the lowest lines for sewer. Once the work on sewer is finished, he said, they will refill, and the dirt must meet all street compaction requirements whenever it is filled back in, just in case certain parts of that area are not dug up again.
Cole said it can seem to an onlooker like a lot of work is happening over and over, but it isn’t. Each dig is to work on a specific line or a task.
